The beginning of a new adventure started in Shanghai. Mat and I started our trip with a little stop over in Shanghai. You can get a visa on arrival in Shanghai if you have onward travel booked, and plan on leaving within 72 hours of your arrival. So we took advantage of this, considering we found a cheap flight between Vancouver and Shanghai.
We arrived in Shanghai and grabbed a taxi to our hostel. After checking in and getting settled in we hit the streets and then began to explore to find our selves some grub! It didn’t take long for us to find that we were not in a touristy area as there was not a spec of english anywhere to be found. We then stumbled upon a little hole in the wall restaurant and decided to grab some food. We sat down and then found we could not read the menu. So we then pointed at some fried rice on the menu and then ate our rice. With many odd looks from locals Im pretty sure we only ordered a side dish. We then headed back to our hostel for so much needed sleep.
We woke up in the morning and enjoyed a breakfast of toast and steamed buns. We then were ready to go explore all that Shanghai had to offer. We headed towards the people square and walked around and explored what the city had to offer. We first ended up at the National Museum. After a good time at the museum we went for a stroll where we found ourselves in high end mall. Which was heaps of fun. We then wandered off to a street where we found many shops including the M&M store. This place had two floors of nothing but M&M merchandise it was quite the store to see. We then grabbed some dinner and made are way back to the hostel. I hope to one day spend a bit more time in Shanghai some time. Overall it was really nice to get see another city even in the little time we had there but well worth the experience.
Have you spent a long layover in a city just to explore it or planning to? Please leave a reply in the comments bellow.
