Returning back to my country from my travels in Asia. Has made me appreciate home a bit more. I knew coming back to Canada I would like to be a “backyard tourist”. So on a weekend visit to my grandparents home, my sister, my cousin and I went and checked out Fort Edmonton. At the fort you travel back in Canadian history, to the time of early settlers trading beaver pelts with the aboriginals and up to the 1920s homestead homes. This park shows the struggles of the early settlers who migrated to Canada along with some displays of the aboriginal people of Canada.
You can begin your trip hopping on a street car or the steam train to the fort. This is all included with your ticket fee, so be sure to give these a ride. After exploring the Fort you will slowly transition into newer developments of Edmonton’s past. As you travel through time you get to see many people dressed in period accurate clothing, many of them actors who will stay in character as they explain the history of the buildings and things around you.
I highly suggest you check out the capitol theatre when you go to Fort Edmonton(still covered under your admission). This was an awesome experience! Located in the original cinema, it has been upgraded to a modern day state of the art theatre. It will play a film on the history of Edmonton and the interactions with the westerner settlers and the aboriginal people. The show is a must see with fog and snow in the cinema it is truly unique!
After a day exploring Canadian historic buildings be sure to check out the parks midway! Yes, it has a little midway with a carousel, Ferris wheel, fun house and many carnival games. This is a nice way to end your day after a day long history lesson. Fort Edmonton park is open all throughout the summer. They also offer special events throughout the year so be sure to check there website at https://www.fortedmontonpark.ca.
