So when I first started to plan to go to Cambodia I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew of Angkor Wat and that was really all. But then I stumbled upon something. In Cambodia you can go to a shooting range and shoot in full auto with a M16 and a AK47. Or if you want to have a little more fun why not shoot an actual machine gun? But the cherry on top was of course was do you want to throw a grenade? The inner child in me woke up and said “I like blowing stuff up”. So naturally I had to go.
It was my first day in Siem Reap and I really wasn’t sure what I was going to do. So I left the hostel and got breakfast. Then a tuk tuk driver came up to me and tried selling me a bunch of places to go and he mentioned the shooting range. I could not resist; he said I could shoot what ever I wanted. I asked how much and he told me rough prices and soon after, we were off towards the range.
I don’t know much about the range itself but it’s about 25 km outside of Siem Reap. When I arrived I saw a wall of guns and rocket launchers. I thought to myself “I think this is going to be fun.” So I got sat at a table and given a menu of guns. What did I want to shoot? I was disappointed to see that there was no grenades on the menu. So I went with a AK47, M16, and a M60 machine gun.
I started with the AK47. I shot in semi auto then full auto. Needless to say it was a lot of fun. Then I shot a M16 a lot like the AK47. I shot semi auto then full auto. Then I went crazy and shot the M60, the machine gun. I can’t shoot with that at all; I barely hit the target, but had never thought I would ever shoot a machine gun in my life so I was all smiles afterwards. I was covered in oil from the gun, but it was a good time. Then the owner came up to me and asked “Do you want to throw grenade?” I looked at him went I don’t know? I had already spent way more then I originally was planning to. I went saying I would do the AK47 and the M16 only. So after adding the machine gun, which doubled what I was originally going to spend, a grenade was definitely going to put me back a bit.
But where else was I going to be able to throw a grenade? So I added it to my bill. They took me behind their club house and got me to throw rocks into the creek. Then gave me a grenade..This had now gathered a large group of spectators. So I then pulled the pin and threw the grenade into the creek. Then BOOM the water went high into the air. This was a lot of fun. I’m really happy to say I got to throw a grenade.
Overall I’m happy I went to do this but it easily was the most expensive thing I’ve done in SE Asia. 2 clips for the M16 and AK47 was $100US and the machine gun was $100US and the grenade was $60US.
Have you ever shot a machine gun or thrown a grenade? If so where did you do it?
